Most couples talk about money. Very few have actually talked about what they believe money is for.
That's the gap this template is designed to close.
This is the exact spreadsheet my husband and I have used for over ten years to run our household finances, through two incomes, an entrepreneurial pivot, a baby, and more than one version of the same argument about spending and risk and what we were actually building toward. We didn't get it right immediately. But once we had a structure for the conversation, we stopped having it badly.
What makes it different from a generic budget tracker is that it's built around the conversation underneath the numbers. What do you each earn? What are you each spending, independently? What are you building toward together, and does your partner actually know that? Where are the gaps between what you think the money is for and what you're actually doing with it?
Most couples find out the answers to those questions mid-argument. This is the version where you find out before it becomes one.
What's included: Monthly household budget tracker, personal spending columns for both partners, a shared expense calculator, and a short guide on how we actually use it, including the questions we ask each other on the first Monday of every month.
Best for: couples combining finances for the first time, parents managing a household on two incomes, and anyone who's been putting off the real conversation for longer than they'd like to admit.

So this is the first time I have used an excel sheet to track my money, and was forced to do this simply because we are trying to save for a new baby that is on the way and so it is important for us to start tracking expenses. I'll let you know how it goes but already loving the simplicity of it. Thank you
